Overall Review

Audemars Piguet unveiled several new tourbillon versions featuring a new movement and fresh design cues to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak. A 41 mm openworked Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon is featured in the 4 new anniversary timepieces for the very first time.

The Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked watch has a stainless steel casing and band. They are constructed of titanium, rose gold, as well as stainless steel in three variants. The latest tourbillon variants’ 41 mm case and bracelet have more prominent bevels, which improve the specular lighting between the cleaned and saturated faces. The linked bracelet’s initial four strands are slightly narrower than the previous one.

Each element of the new Royal Oak Selfwinding Tourbillon Openworked has been treated in accordance with all the standards of Haute Horlogerie crafts. It thus features “traits tirés,” satin finishes, round and sunray polishing, snailing, and refined chamfers. At hour six, there is an exposed flying tourbillon. The primary plate is the only thing holding it up.

This brand-new Royal Oak Selfwinding Tourbillon watch also features dials with a smokey blue color. Against the dark blue dial, the white gold hourly markings, as well as hands, strike out. Sandblasted dials, which have become a popular replacement for the classic Tapisserie pattern in the Royal Oak series, are featured on this version.

The Royal Oak Selfwinding Tourbillon Openworked now uses the recently released caliber 2972, which blends a center rotor and a flying tourbillon. The caliber 2950, which was launched in 2019 to Audemars Piguet’s Code 11.59 range, served as the foundation for this.

In open-worked movements, the primary plate, as well as bridges, are stripped off as much material as is practical. Electro-erosion (EDM) was used to enhance further the major plate and bridge shapes, which were first machined out using CNC equipment. It makes it possible to remove very small amounts of material very precisely. The combined power reserve of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Tourbillon Openworked is 65 hours.

The watch’s casing and bracelet have been hand-finished with alternately cleaned and saturated faces. The brand has grown to be known for its unique blend of matt as well as shiny surfaces.

A 22-carat rose gold anniversary oscillation weight completes the new Royal Oak Flying Tourbillon 2022 edition. Rhodium plating is present on the titanium and stainless steel variants.

On the face of the oscillation, weight is inscribed the “50 years” emblem and the letters AP. All Royal Oak models created till December 31, 2022, will feature this oscillating weight, as per CEO Bennahmias.
