The brothers Charles Antoine LeCoultre and François Ulysse LeCoultre built the first LeCoultre timepiece workshop in the Vallée de Joux in 1833. Antoine was a master artisan who constantly improved his abilities to create new production techniques and manufacturing methods for the watches. Antoine set the record by developing the first device to analyze the micron in 1884. After three years, he presented the crown wound system, another ground-breaking invention that eliminates the need for a key to wind and reset watches.

LeCoultre’s exquisitely constructed golden chronometer won the gold prize at the 1st World Exhibition in London in just a few years. The company expanded rapidly within a short period, becoming one of Switzerland’s best-renowned manufacturers. The business had grown to 100 employees by 1860 and had shifted to in-house in all watchmaking operations for the very first time.

Throughout the years that followed, Antoine developed a number of ground-breaking watchmaking inventions. Even today, these inventions still serve as a source of inspiration for Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmakers.

More than 500 distinct calibers with complexities, which include over 200 Chronos and repeaters, as well as countless grand complexities, have been produced by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture so far. The planet’s tiniest caliber and most complex pocket watches, plus a wristwatch featuring near-perpetual movement, are among the brand’s historical achievements.

The firm’s creator, Antoine LeCoultre, set the bar so high for the original timepiece components he produced that no device could measure the level of imperfection. Therefore he built the most precise measurement tool in the world to establish even greater standards. For over 50 years, this Millionomètre functioned as a standard.
